bareBuntu is a minimal ubuntu derivative which uses a script to install the distribution on the guest partition rather than the traditional live cd method. This has the advantage of being a drastically smaller download than a live-cd image, and allows the installation to be further customized by editing the install script.
By default, the installation script does not install any graphical applications requiring X. It does provide a basic tool set to be a functioning system, however.
Additions to the installation can be added using apt-get or aptitude, or by running a script to automate this task. This allows the creation of configuration specific installs, and simplifies remote management.
