When the intention of the design project becomes uncertain, or is restricted by implemented limitations, it does not constitute failure; rather it presents the designer with new opportunities. The intention now enters into a condition of inquiry that constantly redirects questions back to its own grounding - the "brief" or originating text - which is now placed under a radical contingency. The activities of designing and making—when they engage with new technologies—emerge as a kind of research that develops under the questions: How does this influence the intention? How does the constraint influence the process?
