Intro
This application was developed because of the need to generate and maintain unique part numbers for designed parts and assemblies.
Currently the application utilizes the SolidWorks API, but with a little stripping down the application could be used for any CAD system.
Scope
This was developed completely with free software. SQL Express and VB.NET Express. The intention was to keep track of parts generated through out a day of designing. Rather than saving parts as "Part1" or "Gusset" or "Bracket", we give the part a sequential number and be done with it. Eventually we would like to come up with unique naming conventions and internally used nomenclature at some point.
Future
I thought that it would be cool to have a down loadable client app and the users database be hosted remotley. The user could set up his database and naming conventions the way he saw fit. We might even give some f
