spriteKodo is a tool which assembles a single sprite image out of multiple source images, and generates accompanying CSS. It uses rectangle layout optimization heuristics to minimize the size of the sprite.
One of the bottlenecks in many web pages is the large number of images they load (even if the images themselves are small). For example, if a page has 15 small .gif images - the page load can slow down because of the overhead involved with creating 15 HTTP connections to fetch them. The solution is to combine your images into one larger image, and then use CSS rules to define which part of the larger image to slice out.
This tool makes that whole process easy.
