Kasper is designed to assist in recovery of password-protected Stuffit archives.
Stuffit archives (usually denoted with a .sit file extension) were the standard way to compress files under the classic Mac OS and Stuffit Expander was bundled with Macs until Mac OS X Tiger (10.4).
Stuffit X archives (denoted with .sitx) utilize greater compression and encryption than .sit and is the current Stuffit standard.
Password protected encrypted archives were a feature added first around Stuffit 1.5, then updated for Stuffit 4, then Stuffit 5, and then to the new Stuffit X standard with Stuffit 7.
Due to the lack of popularity and need, password recovery programs were never created for Stuffit.
There exist password changing software for the original Stuffit 1.5 archives, but the methods used do not work on more modern archives.
